Greece Wildfires Trigger Tourist Evacuations

Flights, Transfers and Package Holidays

Airlines may continue flying to Greek airports if the airport itself is operating safely, even when resort areas nearby are disrupted. That means a live flight status does not automatically prove that your final destination is unaffected. Package-holiday customers should contact their tour operator first, because the operator is usually responsible for accommodation and transfers as part of the booking. Independent travellers should speak directly to hotels, car hire firms and insurers, and should keep written records of any cancellations, relocation offers or official advice.

What to Do If You Are Already There

If you are already in Halkidiki or another affected part of Greece, follow instructions from police, firefighters, hotel staff and local authorities without delay. Do not wait until you can see flames, because smoke, wind direction and road access can change quickly. Keep your phone charged, enable roaming or local data, and share your location with family or travelling companions. If you have breathing difficulties, young children or elderly relatives with you, ask your hotel about indoor clean-air spaces or relocation options before smoke becomes severe.

Insurance, Refunds and Your Rights

Your rights depend on what is cancelled, who cancels it and what official advice says at the time. If an airline cancels a flight, you may be entitled to rerouting or a refund, although compensation can be limited when disruption is caused by extraordinary circumstances such as severe weather or wildfires. If your hotel is closed or your package holiday cannot be delivered as booked, your provider should explain alternatives, refunds or rearrangements. Travel insurance may help with abandonment, curtailment, delays or emergency accommodation, but policies vary and often require you to contact the insurer before making major new bookings.

How to Decide Whether to Travel

Before departure, check three things: official travel advice, the operational status of your accommodation, and the reliability of your route from airport to resort. If all three are clear, your trip may still go ahead with sensible precautions such as avoiding fire-risk areas and keeping flexible plans. If one of those checks fails, ask your airline, tour operator or hotel for alternatives in writing before cancelling yourself. Travellers with medical vulnerabilities should take a lower-risk approach, especially where smoke or high temperatures are forecast.

The Bottom Line for Greece Holidays

The safest approach on 17 August 2026 is to treat the Greece wildfire situation as localised but serious. Do not assume your holiday is cancelled simply because wildfires are in the news, but do not ignore evacuation reports if you are booked for Halkidiki or nearby areas. Keep checking official sources, stay in close contact with your provider, and have a backup plan for accommodation and transport. If authorities tell you to evacuate, your priority is to leave safely first and sort refunds, receipts and insurance claims afterwards.
