On A350 routes, join Flying Club (free) before flying — WiFi is completely free, gate-to-gate, at up to 1 Gbps. This is the fastest WiFi in the sky. On 787 routes, £2.99 messaging is good value for staying in touch. The £29.99 premium surf on 787 is steep and Virgin's own note says it's 'not quite up to streaming or internet calling' — stick with messaging. Upper Class passengers get free internet on all aircraft regardless. A350 routes include JFK, Singapore, Bangkok — check your aircraft type at booking.
