Holidaying in Switzerland can be a blissful and peaceful affair, but sometimes, you want something just a little more exciting. That’s where a Switzerland mountain coaster comes in.
These contraptions essentially send you hurtling down a mountain on a set of tracks or a slide, giving you an incredible sense of freedom and speed.
The best of them are safe and exciting, making a Switzerland mountain coaster a must if you’re travelling to this wonderful country. Here are our 20 favourite Switzerland mountain coasters!
1. Pradaschier Coaster
The world-famous Pradaschier is the longest Switzerland mountain coaster, and it’s incredibly thrilling, although it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. You’ll plummet down this slide at up to 40 kilometres per hour, so make sure you’re prepared for some serious alpine thrills!
2. Glacier 3000
Although this alpine coaster is only accessible during summer, you absolutely must make the time to visit it if that’s when you’re travelling. Boasting 10 curves and 3 gravity-defying jumps, this is the perfect coaster for the thrill-seeker in your party, and it’s a fast one at up to 40 kilometres per hour, too.
This is a much more sedate experience than the aforementioned two coasters, so if you’re looking for a Switzerland mountain coaster that isn’t going to be quite as heart-stopping, then the Heimwehfluh Rodelbahn is for you. Kids can even ride this one unaccompanied for that extra element of adventure!
4. Kronberg Bobbahn
You’ll find this alpine coaster included as part of the attractions at the wider Kronberg resort, so it’s perfect if you’re already planning a visit to this acclaimed location. It’s a 1000-metre coaster with plenty of room for adults and kids, but you’ll want to get here early, as the resort can get busy.
5. Oeschinensee Rodelbahn
The word “Rodelbahn” is German for “toboggan run”, which is why you’ll see it a lot on this list. The one at the Oeschinen mountain station is a great time for kids and adults alike, and during summer, it’s open all the way until 5:30pm, so you’ll have plenty of time to add it into your itinerary.
6. Floomzer
The name “Floomzer” is a rather cute nickname for this toboggan run since it takes place in the Flumserberg resort area. A scenic chairlift will take you all the way to the top of the toboggan run, and from there, you’ve got a 2km run to enjoy, with plenty of speed to make you feel every heartbeat while you’re riding.
7. Brunni Sommerrodelbahn
As the name suggests, the toboggan run in Brunni is only available during the summer months, so make sure to make this part of your trip if you’re visiting Switzerland when it’s sunny. Kids as young as 3 can ride this one, so if your little one is expressing a taste for adventure, this is a great place to go.
8. Frakigaudi Rodelbahn
Starting near the Frakmuntegg mountain station, this toboggan run is one for true daredevils. It boasts some seriously steep curves and sharp turns, as well as several jumps from which you can admire the gorgeous Swiss scenery. Some say this is the longest summer Switzerland mountain coaster you’ll find!
9. Rodelbahn Atzmaning
The Atzmaning resort is home to a number of different activities, one of which is a 700-metre mountain coaster of the slide variety. It’s kid-friendly, naturally, and if you’re not a fan of the toboggan ride - or if one of your party isn’t - then there’s lots of other stuff to do here.
10. Monte Tamaro Coaster Bob
We wouldn’t recommend heading onto this mountain coaster unless you’re serious about your thrills. It can reach top speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour, which is a true adrenaline rush. With that said, it’s possible to take kids as young as 3 onto this coaster, so if they can do it, so can you, right?
11. Pfingstegg Sommerrodelbahn
This coaster closes between October and May, so if you’re going to visit, you’ll need to make sure you’re heading there in the summer months. When you do get there, though, you’ll find that the ride itself is a wonderful time for more adventurously-minded types.
12. Moleson-sur-Gruyeres Summer Sledge
This luge is fenced off on either side, making it perhaps a slightly less daunting prospect than some of its alternatives. Once again, kids as young as 3 can ride, although they must be accompanied by an adult. Still, this is such a fun Switzerland mountain coaster that you’ll want to accompany them anyway!
13. Gelmerbahn
The Gelmerbahn boasts a 106 percent gradient, making it the “steepest open passenger funicular railway in Europe”, according to its official website. If you’re up for a thrill and you want something a little more picturesque than your standard mountain coaster, Gelmerbahn will provide.
14. Sommerrodelbahn Schwarzsee
Promising a fun tobogganing time for young and old alike, this run is only open during the summer season, like many toboggan runs, and you’ll only find it taking on customers when the weather is dry. Still, it’s well worth your time, and it’s a beautiful run as well, so it’s great for sightseeing.
15. Schongiland
This Swiss theme park boasts a huge number of activities for the whole family to enjoy, one of which is a superb toboggan run that you’ll keep coming back for. Other activities include a pedal car course, a somersaulting loop, and even a petting zoo where you can hang out with some cute animals.
16. Rodelbahn Rischli
With 900 metres of slide to enjoy and 12 separate bends to course around, Rodelbahn Rischli is another great option for adventurous holidaymakers. Again, you won’t want to attempt this one if it’s raining, but when the weather is dry and warm, this is a great way to spend a few hours.
17. Rodelbobbahn Feeblitz
Customers on this coaster have said that while it may not look particularly impressive at first glance, it’s actually an incredible coaster that hides much of its excitement behind forested dips. As such, if you get to this toboggan run and think it might not be all you thought it was, give it a try anyway!
18. Rodelbahn Feeline
Boasting 1.2 kilometres of track, this toboggan run’s carts also equip you with a brake lever, which ensures that you can go at whatever speed you like (within reason, of course). Naturally, we’d recommend going as fast as it’s safe to go so that you can enjoy the thrills of this coaster!
19. Stuckli Run
Also known as the Hochstuckli, you’ll find plenty of fun to be had on this wonderful coaster. It’s another toboggan run with a slide structure, and it’s recommended for both kids and adults to try this one out, as it’s a once-in-a-lifetime thrill you won’t forget in a hurry.
20. Wirzweli Sommerrodelbahn
Capping off our list is this exciting coaster, which takes you through a scenic Swiss valley on your very own toboggan. This one is open between May and November, so if you’re visiting Switzerland in the winter months, then you may want to reschedule so that you can incorporate this Rodelbahn experience.
